Bettany Centre for Entrepreneurship
2022 Year in Review

January – March
First Investment of the Cranfield Seed Fund
In January 2022, Cranfield University launched a new Cranfield Seed Fund, using philanthropic gifts from alumni donors to provide early investment for promising entrepreneurs who have a link to the university. The first investment was awarded to FinCrime Dynamics, a FinTech business based in Cambridge which helps financial institutions test and improve crime controls. The business was founded by Dr Edgar Lopez-Rojas, a current Cranfield EMBA.

Unilever Innovation Accelerator
In collaboration with RIO and C4D, we hosted the fourth annual Unilever Innovation Accelerator. This corporate entrepreneurship challenge brought together more than 300 students from across Cranfield to develop innovative solutions for Unilever and Ekaterra. The competition showed how magic can happen when you combine students from technology and management. Congratulations to Team ‘B.E.A.T’ for winning this year's challenge!

Start-Up Weekends
We held two Start-Up Weekends helping to incubate the ideas of an incredible 87 participants, including alumni, students and even some staff from across campus. A huge thank you to everyone who took part. A special mention needs to go to our alumni, many of whom repeatedly turn up to support this programme and instil entrepreneurial spirit and discipline. We could not do it without you!

Strong year for Executive Education
2022 has been quite a year for the Bettany Centre’s executive education programme. Thanks to our partnerships with SEMLEP, Central Bedfordshire Council, Milton Keynes Council and Luton Council, we have supported over 300 local businesses over a wide range of courses helping them in a number of key areas.
Highlights include completing our Peer 2 Peer network programme developed as part of the national government response to businesses struggling as a result of the pandemic, as well as our Growth Curve masterclass series which demonstrated the best of what a leading business school can offer SMEs and which was hugely popular with participants.
Our Ready for Scale and Ready For Net Zero Growth programmes (also known internally as our baby BGP) continue to go from strength to strength supporting over 100 businesses and 150 businesses respectively in the year.
Excitingly, thanks to support from North and West Northamptonshire Councils we were selected as a provider for SEMLEP’s Green Recovery and Innovation Programme and launched an exciting programme helping nearly 50 SMEs to develop strategic decarbonisation plans for their businesses. Watch this space for 2023 where we plan to build on the base that was developed to follow on from this exciting initiative.
Read our latest blog 'The end of the beginning' by Martin Spiller which marks the successful completion of our delivery of the Peer Networks programme for SEMLEP's Growth Hub.
Ideas to Innovation (i2i)
Over 40 doctoral students from Cranfield and the C-DICE network (Centre for Postdoctoral Development in Infrastructure Cities and Energy) joined us online for i2i to explore the social and economic relevance of their research and how it can be commercialised. Despite being online, it was a fantastic opportunity to network with other doctoral researchers from various disciplines and institutions.

Venture Capital Investment Competition
The Bettany Centre again hosted the North European Final of the Venture Capital Investment Competition (VCIC). Moreover, a team of Cranfield MBAs took part in the South European final, winning the event, which took them to the global final in the US. After a hotly contested two days, the Cranfield team ended up in the top six and the highest non-US ranked school. We are incredibly proud of the team and all the amazing alumni who helped and supported their journey. Thank you!

Entrepreneurship Speaker Series
Our popular Bettany Centre Entrepreneurship Speaker Series continued both face to face and online in February. Over 600 people attended these events listening to our entrepreneurs and networking among participants over pizza and drinks. We would like to extend our special thanks to our fabulous speakers Adam Nemenyi, James Bidwell, and our panel Dan George, Jessica Parrish and Joey Powis.
For those of you not lucky enough to attend any of these events in person or online you can find out more about their stories below:

NatWest Hackathon
In collaboration with NatWest, we ran our annual NatWest Hackathon where students from across campus addressed real-world challenges relating to climate change, The winner, “Team MBA”, won a £1,000 prize money to support their business development and a golden ticket for the new NatWest Climate Accelerator.

April – June
Venture Day
Following a two-year break, we were delighted to host Cranfield VentureDay 2022 face-to-face once again. Over 150 businesses, investors, and entrepreneurs joined us for a day of panel discussions, keynote speakers, and networking sessions.
The grand theme of the day was 'Building Resilience for a Sustainable and Profitable Future'. A big thank you to our speakers, panellists, sponsors, and supporters for making it such an insightful, inspiring, and fun day. To view images from the day please see here and hope to see you at the next one!

Santander Elevator Pitch Competition
One of the highlights in the event calendar is the Santander Pitch Competition. Selected businesses get to pitch their business ideas to a senior panel of investors, entrepreneurs and industry experts for a chance to win from a prize fund of £5,000 provided by Santander Universities.
Drawn from across the university the eventual winners, Kreios Space, managed to fend off strong competition from masters, doctoral and even executive education students to win first prize and a chance to pitch for investment as part of Investor Day.

REF 2022 - Cranfield's Impact
This year’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) results are an absolute testament to our ethos of delivering real-world IMPACT. The REF is the UK’s system for assessing the quality and impact of research in UK universities and Cranfield School of Management smashed it ranking 7th for research impact in Business and Management, out of 108 business schools.

EU-Startups Summit
Dr Oksana Koryak and several of our MSc in Management and Entrepreneurship (MENT) students attended the EU Start-Up Summit in Barcelona in May. Attendance at this conference is the “crown jewel” of our extra-curricular offering and is exclusively offered to our MENT students. The programme featured insightful keynotes and fireside chats with successful European scaleups and investors. It was a perfect opportunity for our students to get inspired, embed their learning from their taught programme and extra-curricular activities, and expand their networks.

Research
Syed Yaqzan, Doctoral Researcher at the Bettany Centre had a big moment in Texas, USA. Syed presented his research paper co-authored by Dr Stephanie Hussels and Dr Oksana Koryak at the Babson College Entrepreneurship Research Conference (BCERC). He had an unforgettable time and took some great learnings from it. The conference was hosted by Babson College and Baylor University. Syed was also featured in the Financial Times sharing industry expert advice on Scope 3 emissions.

Bettany team Summer BBQ
In Bettany Centre tradition, the team and friends of the Centre gathered again for the annual Bettany Summer BBQ to reflect on the year, and enjoy good food and company before heading on their well-deserved summer break.

July – September
Rankings
Excitingly, in 2022, Cranfield School of Management was ranked number 2 in the UK and number 7 in Europe by Bloomberg for Entrepreneurship teaching in Business Schools, and in the América Economia Global MBA Rankings 2022, we were ranked 5th in the world for innovation and entrepreneurship, highlighting the range and quality of our entrepreneurship offering. We were of course over the moon to hear this news and a big thank you goes to all our alumni and friends of the Centre for their ongoing strong support in promoting entrepreneurship.

Cranfield Investor Day
We held another successful Investor Day event in which five investment ready alumni linked businesses pitched for investment to over 17 angel and VC investors who joined us on the day. Thank you to all of those involved for donating your time and experience to the businesses who all found it hugely exciting, interesting and useful!

Biggest ever MENT programme
We do not like to brag, but this year saw over 40 students welcomed on to the MSc Management and Entrepreneurship (MENT) programme within the Bettany Centre for Entrepreneurship.
It has been great to add such a large, diverse and interesting group of students to what is our largest ever cohort and we cannot wait to see their development over the course of their studies from such a proactive and exciting group of people.

October – December
Global Entrepreneurship Week
This is the first time we have run this event and it was a great success! In total, we ran nine events over the week, attracting 339 attendees, with many coming to multiple events. The efforts paid off, with more staff and students at Cranfield now being aware of the importance of entrepreneurship and an entrepreneurial mindset as well as the extensive extra-curricular entrepreneurship offering available at Cranfield. Thank you for everybody’s input and support!
See the event site here for more information.

It was a wonderful opportunity to thank alumni, colleagues, and friends of the Bettany for all their support throughout the year and catch up on what everybody has been doing. There was such a buzz in the room! We are very privileged to have such a powerful network of entrepreneurs at Cranfield.
